Ingredients
Rolled Oats – Use old-fashioned rolled oats for a creamy but slightly textured oatmeal.
Milk – Milk gives the oatmeal a creamy texture and richer flavour. You can use dairy milk or your favourite plant-based milk.
Chai Spice Mix – Use my homemade chai spice mix for a fragrant blend of toasted cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, fennel, black pepper, star anise and ginger. A store-bought chai spice blend also works, or you can use individual ground spices. Adjust depending on how strongly spiced you like your oatmeal
Cinnamon powder – adds a warm, sweet cinnamon flavour.
Brown Sugar – Adds sweetness and pairs beautifully with the warming spices. Adjust the amount to taste.
Salt – A small pinch enhances the sweetness and brings all the flavours together.
How to Make Chai Oatmeal
Step 1: Soften the oats
Add the rolled oats and water to a medium saucepan. Place over medium heat and cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the oats begin to soften and absorb some of the water.
Step 2: Add the sugar, spices and milk
Pour in the chai spice mix, cinnamon, sugar, salt and milk. Stir well to combine.
Step 3: Cook until creamy
Reduce the heat to low and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring regularly so the oats don’t stick to the bottom of the pan. Continue cooking until the oats are soft and the oatmeal is creamy.
Step 4: Adjust the consistency
If the oatmeal is thicker than you like, stir in a splash of extra milk until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Step 5: Serve warm
Spoon the chai oatmeal into bowls and serve warm. Add your favourite toppings such as sliced banana, chopped nuts, raisins, coconut or an extra drizzle of honey or maple syrup.
Can I Make Chai Oatmeal Ahead of Time?
Yes. Chai oatmeal can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for an easy breakfast.
The oatmeal will thicken as it cools, so add a splash of milk when reheating and stir until creamy again. For the best texture, I recommend eating it immediately.
How to Store Chai Oatmeal?
Allow the oatmeal to cool before transferring it to an airtight container. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
To reheat, place it in a pot over low heat or microwave it in short intervals. Add a little milk and stir well to loosen the oatmeal as it warms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use your homemade chai spice mix?
Absolutely. My homemade chai spice mix works beautifully in this oatmeal and gives it a deeper, more aromatic flavour. However, you don’t need to make the spice mix specifically for this recipe. A store-bought chai spice blend or individual ground spices can also be used.
Can I use individual spices instead of chai spice mix?
Yes. If you don’t have a chai spice blend, you can use a combination of ground cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves. Adjust the amounts to suit your taste.
Can I make this chai oatmeal vegan?
Yes. Use a plant-based milk such as almond, soy or oat milk, and use maple syrup or brown sugar as your sweetener.
Can I use quick oats?
Yes, but the cooking time will be shorter and the texture will be softer. Follow the cooking instructions on the packet and adjust the amount of milk if necessary.
How can I make the oatmeal creamier?
Use milk instead of water and cook the oats gently over low heat. You can also add a little extra milk at the end until you reach your preferred consistency.
